Cheerleader (although I don’t hate her for the fact…surprising right?) Isobel Lanley is probably one of the coolest girls I’ve ever met in a book. No really, shes smart, funny, nice…everything you really want in a girl character. And not helpless or clueless.
She is annoying in the first few chapters though. Her boyfriend, Brad, the golden-boy who also happens to be on the football team…ew. Hes really protective and dumb!
But, onto the plot.
Isobel is horrified when her English teacher pairs her up with Varen Nethers for a project.
A word on Veren Nethers first. 1. Best name ever. 2. He’s different than every other guy I’ve read about too. (And I think that’s what i liked about this book.) 3. He’s actually goth. Not a loner or bad boy. He has a group of friends. A girlfriend, and she sucks! And 4. He has piercing, blue eyes. He’s nice, but cold, sardonic, sharp-tongued and prickly. He is possibly the best guy ever. And I know I say that a lot but its SO TRUE.
Varen makes it very clear he’d rather not have anything to do with her and she agrees. But when Isobel discovers strange writing in his journal, she can’t help but give Veren another look.
Soon, Isobel finds herself making excuses to be with Varen. Steadily pulled away from her friends and her possessive boyfriend, Isobel ventures deeper and deeper into the dream world Varen has created through the pages of his notebook, a realm where the stories of Edgar Allan Poe have come to life.
Soon demons start popping up, dreams turn into nightmares, and Veren gets sucked in way over his head.
And Isobel must save him. Because…well…she’s pretty sure she’s in love with him. Oh, and he has a lip ring. Epic!
